Blockchain and Applications in the Energy Sector
On 29-30 September 2025, the Politecnico di Torino hosted the PhD course “Blockchain and Applications in the Energy Sector“, organised by LINKS Foundation and the university. The course was delivered by Dr. Alfredo Favenza (LINKS Foundation) and attracted PhD students eager to deepen their understanding of emerging technologies for the future of energy.
The program introduced the fundamentals of blockchain technology and explored its potential applications within the energy sector. Through practical case studies, participants examined how blockchain can:
- Enhance transparency and security in energy data management
- Enable the decentralisation of energy communities and markets
- Unlock new opportunities for data monetisation
- Support innovative solutions for managing energy surpluses and grid stability
A special focus of the course was placed on DATA CELLAR, the European project dedicated to creating a federated energy data space that supports the formation, development and management of Local Energy Communities (LECs) across the EU. By integrating blockchain with the project’s vision, DATA CELLAR demonstrates how digital technologies can pave the way toward a more secure and sustainable energy ecosystem.
The initiative represents a valuable step in bringing research and innovation closer to the academic community, offering PhD students the opportunity to link theoretical knowledge with ongoing European projects that are shaping the energy transition.
